Only God

As I was looking through some pictures today, this one caught my eye. This is the house of a man we visited in Zambia who had HIV and lost a leg due to diabetes. This is what he lived in with no one to assist him on a daily basis. As you can see, the roof is held in place with bricks, so if there is a big windstorm, he will lose his roof with no way to replace it on his own. He stayed in a wheelchair made of a plastic seat bolted to a wheelchair frame. He enjoyed the times when his pastor came to visit because he would read him the Bible which gave him so much hope and joy. When we found out that he could read, we gave him a Bible so he could read daily. The thing that caught my eye is the statement that was painted on a wooden plank on his house: “Only God.

That got me asking “Only God what?” I know for this gentleman it was a statement of hope and faith, but when can we state “Only God?” Here are some thoughts:

Isaiah 43:12 “’…You are witnesses that I am the only God,’ says the Lord.”

Deuteronomy 10:21 “He alone is your God, the only One who is worthy of your praise, the One who has done these mighty miracles that you have seen with your own eyes.”

Luke 18:19 “…“Only God is truly good.”

Matthew 23:9 “And don’t address anyone here on earth as ‘Father,’ for only God in heaven is your spiritual Father.”

Jeremiah 14:22 “Can any of the worthless foreign gods send us rain? Does it fall from the sky by itself? No, you are the one, O Lord our God! Only You can do such things. So we will wait for You to help us.”

1 Corinthians 3:7 “So neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow.”

1 Corinthians 8:6 “But we know that there is only one God, the Father, who created everything, and we live for him. And there is only one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom God made everything and through whom we have been given life.”

Romans 16:27 “All glory to the only wise God, through Jesus Christ, forever. Amen.”

Romans 3:30 “There is only one God, and he makes people right with himself only by faith, whether they are Jews or Gentiles.”

Jude 1:25 “to the only God our Savior be glory, majesty, power and authority, through Jesus Christ our Lord, before all ages, now and forevermore! Amen.”

Ephesians 2:5 “that even though we were dead because of our sins, he gave us life when he raised Christ from the dead. (It is only by God’s grace that you have been saved!)”

So this is our response:

Deuteronomy 13:4 “Serve only the Lord your God and fear him alone. Obey his commands, listen to His voice, and cling to Him.”

Matthew 10:28 “Don’t be afraid of those who want to kill your body; they cannot touch your soul. Fear only God, who can destroy both soul and body in hell.”

2 Corinthians 1:9 “In fact, we expected to die. But as a result, we stopped relying on ourselves and learned to rely only on God, who raises the dead.”

Revelation 19:10 “Then I fell down at his feet to worship him, but he said, ‘No, don’t worship me. I am a servant of God, just like you and your brothers and sisters who testify about their faith in Jesus. Worship only God. For the essence of prophecy is to give a clear witness for Jesus.’”

He is our Only God!!!  No matter what our circumstances may be, we can declare, "Only God!"

  1. This was so beautiful. It was a good reminder of 'only God' anyway, but when thinking of the man in Zambia it became so vivid. I grew up in Zambia and remember so well the faith and love, even in the midst of such hardships.
